Live from Las Vegas $16.98 This stellar nightclub performance, from November 11, 1963, somehow remained under wraps for nearly four decades. Thankfully, it was discovered and issued, first in 2000 by independent mail-order specialists Collectors' Choice Music, then in 2005 by Capitol as part of the Las Vegas Centennial Collection series. In addition to the unique qualities of an unheard vintage recording, Bobby Darin had also cited this run -- at the Flamingo Hotel and Casino in Las Vegas -- to be his last lengthy tour or nightclub engagement due to increasing health concerns. So, it is indeed a special affair. It was rare for a performer to be so accepted as both a sophisticated balladeer as well as a rebellious rocker. Live From Las Vegas reveals both sides of Darin's underappreciated talent of interpretation. Handling ballads such as "My Funny Valentine" and "You're Nobody 'Til Somebody Loves You" with sensitivity and control, Darin conversely rips open up-tempo numbers such as the "Hits Medley: Splish Splash/Beyond the Sea/Artificial Flowers/Clementine." Darin also swings through a spellbinding version of his trademark, "Mack the Knife." This in no way sounds like a man suffering from a rheumatic heart condition. In addition to the music, Darin offers up several spoken word interludes. The aptly titled "Comedy Routine" features several impersonations by Darin as set to "One for My Baby (And One More for the Road)." However, when introducing the closer, "The Curtain Falls," Darin is somber, leading to an emotional climax -- not only for this performance, but for a brilliant live career as well. There is little information given in the liner note text regarding the brilliant orchestra heard accompanying Darin during this run. However, their efforts are noted by the star and rightfully so, as they swing right along with him -- never overpowering, but infinitely enhancing, underscoring, and punctuating the proceedings. ~ Lindsay Planer, All Music Guide

Goodbye Country (Hello Nightclub) $13.98 Far more than just a sampladelic trip-hop group by their third full album jaunt, Groove Armada began solidifying its reputation as one of the most copacetic production acts in electronica, equally comfortable building grooves behind folkie Richie Havens, disco maverick Nile Rodgers, and underground rapper Jeru the Damaja (yes, all three make appearances). The pair kick it off in grand style, recruiting Jeru (one of the most underrated rappers in the hip-hop world) for "Suntoucher," a breathtaking production that seeks the middle ground between a classy spy soundtrack and a classic rap track (straight out of DJ Premier's playbook). The trailer single, "Superstylin'," is another great track, a smooth, swift fusion of acid house and dub with the chatting of frequent collaborator Mike Daniels. Groove Armada isn't just branching out from "juvenile" sampladelia to more "mature" band productions, the duo's getting better at making music. Unfortunately, problems arise when the pair mature so far they soon reach the bland, ultra-smooth side of adult contemporary. The two features for Richie Havens ("Little By Little," "My Friend") are prime examples; the bright acoustic guitar and Havens' wizened growl are the only "edgy" elements in the entire productions. Sixties Rebellion, Vol. 9: The Nightclub $14.98 This installment of one of the longer-running '60s garage compilation series is routine, but an amiably good listen, if that's an appropriate way to describe music that tries so hard to be adolescently rebellious. The subtitle, "The Nightclub," seems nothing more than an excuse to put some cartoons of topless women on the cover, as it's a pretty typical spread of various aspects of the mid-'60s American garage rock sound. About the best track is Dennis & the Times' "Flight Patterns," which is a pretty good approximation of the Byrds' early psychedelic 1966 sound, particularly in the chiming 12-string guitars and jagged "Eight Miles High"-type instrumental break. The 1963 acetate by Deep Soul Cole is, according to the scant liner notes, a 15-year-old Fred Cole (future Lollipop Shoppe lead singer), with Larry Williams handling guitar and production and the Blossoms on backup vocals. It's an interesting relic of Cole's early career on a song called "Poverty Shack" that can't seem to make up its mind whether to be a cop of "Tobacco Road" or "Money Honey." No one else with name recognition appears on the comp (as far as listeners know, since "Poverty Shack" is the only track described in the meager liner notes), which has a bit of a greater R&B/frat soul bias than the usual garage anthology.
